Having two older sisters, I was introduced to the Beach Boys by them. While all the other kids at their school were raving about the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, they were always loyal to the Beach Boys. I remember getting ‘told off’ on more than one occasion for sneaking into their room just so I could play “The Best of the Beach Boys”!!

The first album I bought was Beach Boys Greatest Hits, then Sunflower, which is still my fave Beach Boys album even today. Steadily through the years I acquired every Beach Boys album available, eventually replacing them all with CD. The rest, as they say, is history…

“I bought my treasured “Les Paul” in 1975 for £450 of hard earned cash and joined a five piece harmony band “Bugsy” working for “Wheatley Taverns” among others. This band performed my first Beach Boys song “Good Vibrations”(I sang the same part then as I do now). I met up with bass player “Dave” and drummer “Paul” when they were in “Endless Summer” tribute band and I joined Paul in “The Love Swallows” 6 piece band in 1998. Both these bands drifted away around 2000, and from the sea spray came forth “The Beached Boys”.

My first exposure to the music of the Beach Boys was through a TV commercial. I was about thirteen years old and have no recollection of what the commercial was about other than it featured a cartoon kid on a skateboard to the tune of what I later discovered was “I Get Around”. It was one of those defining moments, I just couldn’t believe it was simply a jingle, it was too good. A year or so later “Good Vibrations” was re-released and climbed high into the charts again, another wonderful record and by a band called the Beach Boys. Just after this, a compilation album was released called “ The Beach Boys, twenty golden greats”. This album contained both these gems and thus became the first proper album I bought with my own money.

What started me learning to play the guitar was an album called “With the Beatles”. I borrowed it from my friend at school Jonathan Ross (yes “the” Jonathan Ross). It was no longer enough to simply listen and sing along. I had to be able to play those songs. I did give the album back….eventually, still kept the copy of “Rubber Soul” though!”

I have since gone on to play Bass, sometimes Guitar for any number of bands in quite a few different countries and have recorded both here and in the USA. I have had the privilege of meeting Brian Wilson on a number of occasions.

I think the first time I wanted to be in a band was watching “The Monkees” TV show in the 60’s. Seemed to me that singing, running around and having adventures was enough for any boy!

Fast forward to about 1973/4 and I began my musical journey when I was asked to be the drummer in a new band at school. I didn’t have a kit and couldn’t play, but of course said yes and furiously started learning.

School led to university and “Psycho Hamster” a unique psychedelic experience and stalwarts of free festivals in the late 70’s, early 80’s. At the same time I joined “the Treatment”, whose legendary status as psychedelic eccentrics still ripples out.

The mid 80’s saw a shift towards a more mainstream pop direction, eventually culminating with critically acclaimed but commercially doomed “the Company She Keeps”. When the “Company” folded I continued to play covers bands and the odd “Treatment” revival. My passion for the Beach Boys was partially satisfied in the short-lived tribute band “Endless Summer”, but it was only in the band’s resurrected form as “The Beached Boys” that things really came together.

For me playing has always been about GREAT SONGS and having FUN, FUN, FUN, and the music of the Beach Boys gives me the sheer joy of paying tribute to one of pop’s finest bands.”

“I was initially a Brass Player at ten years of age, becoming hooked on “live” performances after playing regular stints at the Royal Albert Hall in various youth orchestras.

Owning copies of albums such as “The Shadows greatest hits”, “Please Please Me” and of course my favourite “Best of the Beach Boys” it wasn’t long before I transferred my affections to guitar orientated pop music. Since joining “the Beached Boys” in 1999 it gives me the excuse and pleasure to play and perform every hit from the afore-mentioned album, plus many more personal favourites”.
